Reflecting on 25 Years of Life

This isn’t going to be easy for me to write so while I take a few deep breaths, please listen to this song (or at least part of it):

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFeJkfB4xKo

“This is a story that I have never told. I gotta get this off my chest to let it go. I need to take back the light inside you stole.”

A few years ago I choreographed a dance routine to “Warrior” for a talent show. I hadn’t danced in awhile so it wasn’t my best performance ever, but something inside me needed an outlet. After I finished, I had to run to the bathroom because I was shaking so bad & sobbing. I’m not open about things in my past because I don’t think it’s something the public needs to know. However, if you are someone who is still healing, you are not alone. Middle school and high school were hell for me, but college was even worse. I suffered for so long and then turned around and made my precious family suffer because of my anger. I was angry at myself for being weak & at God for abandoning me. I hope my mom doesn’t mind me sharing this, but she has told me that she thought she would lose me in college because I was so close to the edge without caring. There is no sugar coating this: I wanted to die.

Tomorrow I turn 25 years old. The broken little girl in middle school didn’t think she would make it this far. The angry college student didn’t want to make it this far. God brought me this far, and He isn’t done yet.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth—Praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord.”  – Psalm 40:1-3

Show Your Colors

July 4th, the day that Americans put the flag on display and shout their pride from the rooftops in honor of freedom.  Now is the perfect time to share what makes me feel patriotic.  I love my country, but I’m not the most vocal about it.  However, there are two things that make my blood run red, white, & blue.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I respect that.  But, I can’t help feeling rage when someone born and raised outside the American borders feels the need to judge.  I am American-born and American-raised.  I can count the number of times I’ve left this country on one hand.  I speak English with an American accent.  I received education and now work as an adult here.  I can criticize this country because I am a citizen and know what I’m talking about (for the most part 😉).  Think of it this way.  As a brother or sister, you can tease your sibling(s) to your heart’s content, but God help the outsider who feels led to do the same.  Suddenly you’re on the defensive!  Perhaps that paints a clearer picture of my point.  Moving on.  I see or hear stories about soldiers every day, but nothing compares to seeing or meeting them in the flesh.  As a retail employee, I meet military personnel of all races and ages and feel an indescribable level of honor and pride to serve them.  I respect the diverse group of people willing to train and fight for this country.  If any soldiers, past or present, are reading this, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The Power of Makeup

I saw this tag on Youtube and immediately wanted to be involved.  This topic is important and needs to be discussed.  Makeup is a powerful thing and should be used with care.  With great power comes great responsibility!  Here is my story:

Growing up as a dancer, one of my favorite times of year was the annual recital.  The downside, however, was having to wear makeup.  The worst part was the eyeliner and mascara.  I would yell at my mom for poking me in the eye even though it was my fault because I was complaining and fidgeting.  I hated makeup!  Then, sometime between junior high and high school, I fell in love with makeup.  My mom eased me into it, but I was already head over heels.  I rarely left the house without wearing it.  As a college student, I had more important things to focus on therefore I was barefaced 75% of the time.  Even though that was merely a season in my life, I learned a lot from something as simple as not wearing makeup.  Fellow students still looked me in the eye and talked to me.  That may sound lame, but the experience broadened my comfort zone.  I have struggled with insecurity for as long as I can remember.  I had this idea that if I didn’t cover up my blemishes and under eye circles, people shouldn’t look at me lest they be disgusted.  Nowadays, I have no problem walking out of the house with as little as mascara and lip balm on my face.  There is nothing wrong with makeup, no matter how much or how little you prefer to wear.  The message I want to emphasize is using makeup to enhance the face God gave you.  Don’t use makeup to hide behind.  You are beautiful!!  Please do not listen to hurtful words and ignore those who try to push you around and make you feel guilty about loving makeup.  There is nothing wrong with makeup, and there is nothing wrong with how you look.

“Put your makeup on, Get your nails done, Curl your hair, Run the extra mile, Keep it slim.  So they like you.  Do they like you.  Get your sexy on, Don’t be shy girl, Take it off, This is what you want, To belong.  So they like you.  Do you like you.  You don’t have to try so hard.  You don’t have to give it all away.  You just have to get up get up get up get up.  You don’t have to change a single thing.”

“Days will come when you don’t have the strength.  When all you hear is you’re not worth anything.  Wondering if you ever could be loved.  And if they truly saw your heart they’d see too much.  You’re beautiful.  You’re beautiful.  You are made for so much more than all of this.  You’re beautiful.  You’re beautiful.  You are treasured, You are sacred, You are His.  You’re beautiful.”

In The Barnyard

In The Barnyard (Source: http://kindredspiritmommy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Shaun_the_Sheep_06.jpg)

Earlier this week, a friend of mine invited me along for a house sitting adventure.  The adventure was mine to have because my friend had already visited this house and barn many times.  I have seen farm animals multiple times in my twenty-one years of life, but feeding them was a brand new experience.  To be exact, there were five dogs, three cats, two doves, two horses, two donkeys, and a small herd of goats and sheep (approximately ten).  The first part of the afternoon was spent inside watching TV with the dogs.  Nothing especially exciting except for the new episode of Once Upon a Time (Any fellow Oncers reading this??).  Eventually it was time to go outside and feed the other animals.  It was raining, but I did not care one bit.  I was practically leaping out of my skin from excitement!  I put on boots and a large coat, and followed my friend’s lead out the door, over the little bridge, and into the barn.  After filling buckets with two kinds of feed, I volunteered to feed the horses (my favorite domestic animal).  I enjoyed every little thing: opening the gate, walking through the rain and mud, and filling the barrels.  What happened next was the real adventure.  I walked into the goat and sheep enclosure but left the feeding task to my friend.  Have you ever watched goats and sheep be fed?  They are greedy!  There were three bowls, and yet as soon as my friend moved on from one bowl to the next, the entire group would ignore the food in front of them and follow the bucket.  After giving the donkeys some feed, we made our way back into the horse pen.  The group of goats and sheep followed, and one particularly bossy sheep managed to push her way in.  She made her way over to one of the horses and watched it eat as though she was going to take part.  Like I said, GREEDY!!  As I made my way through the mud and attempted to herd the animal back to where she belonged, I could not help but laugh.  The seemingly annoying situation was actually a dream come true.  I felt like Anne of Green Gables trying to get her cow out of Rachel’s field with the help of her best friend Diana.  I managed to back the sheep against the gate but simultaneously had to keep the rest of the pushy herd out.  Teamwork prevailed, and all animals were where they were meant to be once again.  I really wish the chase was on video, but alas it is not.  All I have is the hilarious, muddy memory.  I hope I was able to paint a vivid picture and add some laughter to your Saturday night.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend readers!
