Activities For Social Distancing

Most of us have a lot of home time ahead of us so I thought I would share some recommendations to get you through the coming days. I work a lot on the computer with freedom to listen to music or watch a show. If that sounds like your current situation, this list is for you. If you’re not able to work right now, hopefully these recommendations will be a welcome distraction from all the chaos. 💕

*Note: This is a lot of information to keep track of so please inform me of any mistakes so I can fix them. Please & thank you!

Dancers & dance enthusiasts, drop everything & watch Dance Academy. As a former dancer, I’ve never related to something more on a “teen struggling in the dance world” level. If you don’t have Prime, visit the Dance Academy YouTube channel & check out their playlists. The movie Dance Academy: The Comeback is on Netflix. 🩰  For a period show centered on royalty, look no further than Victoria; I’ve only seen season 1, but it’s amazing so far. Four seasons of Luther & all 7 seasons of The Mentalist are available for a dose of crime. I myself am planning a rewatch in the near future. Speaking of crime, there are three miniseries based on stories by Agatha Christie: Ordeal by Innocence, The ABC Murders, & The Pale Horse. I have yet to watch any of them, but if the Queen of Crime is your source, how could you go wrong?? If you need some fashion to boost your spirits, Clinton & Stacy are on hand to present the  12th & final season of What Not To Wear.

I’m Watching: I’m currently making my way through Gavin & Stacey and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Season 1. After taking a break, I’m planning on getting back to Downton Abbey & Grimm.

Animal lovers rejoice! You can admire the wildest of God’s creation while quarantined indoors thanks to live webcams. I’m providing links to two aquariums & two zoos in California, my home state. 🇺🇸 Additionally, you can watch live safaris in South Africa thanks to SafariLIVE. 🇿🇦

Mount, Jane. Ideal Bookshelf 822: Agatha Christie. https://www.idealbookshelf.com/products/ideal-bookshelf-822-agatha-christie.

This is a good time for lighthearted reading so I would recommend a trip down memory lane with nostalgic books such as The Baby-Sitters Club series or the Little House on the Prairie series. It might be a bit grim for this particular moment in time, but if you’re feeling brave, pick up the A Series of Unfortunate Events series. If you read the books & still want more from the ASOUE world, watch the amazing show on Netflix. I didn’t read this series until I was an adult, but it is nonetheless an essential comfort read: Harry PotterMy brand new illustrated editions look very tempting right now!

If you’re a bit of a weirdo like me & can read crime/mystery books at any time, I recommend classics like Agatha Christie, Nancy Drew, & Sherlock Holmes. British Library Crime Classics are also fantastic; my favorite so far is “Antidote to Venom” by Freeman Wills Crofts. If you’d prefer modern small town mysteries with a dose of baking, look no further than the Hannah Swensen series by Joanne Fluke; you can read one of the books & then use the included cookbook to bake recipes from the story. If you like the TV show Criminal Minds, The Patrick Bowers Files series by Steven James is fantastic.

For something a little more out of this world, I implore you to pick up the Illuminae Files trilogy by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff. I guarantee you will fly through all three books at the speed of light. If you have access, I’ve heard the audiobooks are also incredible. Buckle up & prepare for an edge-of-your-seat journey! 🌙

I’m Reading: I’ve been in a horrible reading slump since the end of 2019 so I’m still making my way through “Capturing the Devil” by Kerri Maniscalso.

When I did my 30-day Disney Plus marathon last November, it was fun to plan out themed days so that’s what I recommend you do now. For example, Emperor’s New Groove & Emperor’s New School or Go Figure & Ice Princess or both versions of The Parent Trap1961 & 1998 ). Show some love to specific actors: Aly MichalkaCow Belles, Now You See ItPhil of the Future, & Pixel Perfect ), Brenda SongGet A Clue, Stuck in the SuburbsThe Suite Life of Zack & Cody, & Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior ), Christy Carlson RomanoCadet Kelly, Even Stevens, & Kim Possible ), etc. It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t mention absolute classics like High School Musical & The Cheetah Girls. For more recommendations, use the search bar on the right side of the screen & type “Disney Plus” to see every single movie & TV show I watched during my marathon.

These are my personal favorite movies & shows. My favorite animated movie is Tarzan, followed by Aladdin & Hercules. My favorite princess movies are Mulan, Aladdin, & Pocahontas. My favorite Pixar movies are Monsters, Inc. & Monsters University. My favorite live action movies are Into the Woods, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, & The Moon-SpinnersMy favorite shows are Lizzie McGuire & Kim Possible.

I’m Watching: I’m in the middle of several shows started during my marathon, but the priorities are Lizzie McGuire & the new Disney movies I have yet to watch: Aladdin, Cars 3, Frozen 2, Incredibles 2 ( currently on Netflix ), Mary Poppins Returns ( currently on Netflix ), Ralph Breaks the Internet ( currently on Netflix ), & Toy Story 4.

I’m not personally in a good relationship with exercise at the moment, but I know that some of you will be wanting ways to be active while staying inside. I can recommend some fantastic people on YouTube who will have you sweating in no time.

Tip: If you or your child owns a hula hoop, use that for a workout. Turn on your favorite movie or TV show & move those hips for 30 minutes or more.

If you already have a stash of board games in your home, allow me to recommend my family’s favorites: Clue (available as an app, not free), Logo, & Trivial Pursuit (available as an app, free). We don’t own any right now, but my mom & I also love puzzles. Probably should’ve stocked up before the apocalypse happened! 🙈

*NOTE: After a round or two of the game, check out the film Clue (1985) for free on Crackle. It has a cult following for a reason!

If you have coloring books laying around the house, that’s a great way to relax & destress. There’s also free, printable coloring pages online such as this Golden Girls picture. If you don’t have any coloring tools at home, there are free digital options such as Coloring Book For Adults (Apple only), ColorMe (Apple only), Color Therapy (Apple only), & Happy Color ( Android & Apple ).

I haven’t played games on my laptop in a very long time, but I have to recommend the Papa Louie cooking games from Flipline Studios. They’re addicting & perfect for playing while catching up on audiobooks, music, shows, or podcasts. You can work with any kind of food imaginable: Burgeria ( Android & Apple ), Bakeria ( Android & Apple ), Cheeseria ( Android & Apple ), Cupcakeria Android & Apple ), Donuteria ( Android & Apple ), Freezeria ( Android & Apple ), Hot DoggeriaAndroid & Apple ), Pancakeria ( Android & Apple ), Pastaria, Pizzeria ( Android & Apple ), Scooperia ( Android & Apple ), Sushiria, Taco Mia ( Android & Apple ), & Wingeria Android & Apple ).

*Note: The computer games are free, but the app versions are not. 💰

Speaking of apps, my favorite free phone & tablet games are Angry Birds, Babel Word Game, Candy Crush, Fruit Ninja, Mario Kart Tour, Room Escape: 50 Rooms 1 ( Android & Apple ), Scrabble GO ( Android & Apple ), Two Dots, Word Life, Wordscapes ( same concept as Word Life, Android & Apple ), & Word Stacks ( Android & Apple ). I haven’t played this in awhile, but I used to be obsessed with Diner Dash ( Android & Apple ). If you love music, I recently discovered Dot n Beat ( Android & Apple ) & Tiles Hop ( Android & Apple ).

What I’m Playing: I’ve recently become obsessed with the Crossword app ( Android & Apple ). It’s a great way to start or end my day & keep my mind sharp. I’m also considering a Nancy Drew computer game, which I’ve never completed on my own.

*Note: Batman Begins & The Dark Knight are also on Netflix.

We’ve now come to the end of this long list which could definitely be longer. I suggest we throw caution to the wind & get a little dangerous. 🔥 Here are some crime thrillers that my brother & I are obsessed with: Gone Baby Gone ( Amazon $, Apple $, Google Play $, Hulu, & Starz ), Gone Girl ( Amazon $, Apple $, & Google Play $ ), Insomnia ( Amazon $, Apple $, & Google Play $ ), Nightcrawler ( Amazon $, Apple $, & Google Play $ ), Prisoners ( Amazon $, Apple $, Google Play $, & Hulu ), Se7en ( Amazon $, Apple $, & Google Play $ ), & Zodiac ( Amazon $, Apple $, Crackle, & Google Play $ ). I speak fluent Disney so this list could get quite lengthy. I’ll keep it short with just a few favorites. For soundtracks, look no further than Phil Collins ( Apple & Google Play ). Tarzan ( Apple & Google Play ) & Brother Bear ( not available for digital purchase ) are masterpieces, and it’s an absolute travesty if you haven’t listened yet. My number one song is “If I Never Knew You” from PocahontasApple & Google Play ), which was cut from the movie because it didn’t perform well with kids during test screenings. Thankfully it’s now available as a single & extended scene on DVD. Other favorites include “A Whole New World” from Aladdin ( Apple & Google Play ), “God Bless the Outcasts” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame ( Apple & Google Play ), “Go the Distance” from HerculesApple & Google Play ), “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” from Lilo & Stitch ( Apple & Google Play ),“I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan ( Apple & Google Play ), “I Wont Say I’m in Love” from Hercules ( Apple & Google Play ), & “Life is a Highway” from Cars ( Apple & Google Play ).

I’ve been into metal, especially metalcore, since middle school. A lot of bands had to cancel tours due to Coronavirus, & many may not recover from this loss of income. If you have some extra money to give, I suggest seeking out your favorite singers & bands that don’t have a Beyoncé-level following; they’re the artists to support during this time of inactivity. I would personally like to introduce you to my favorite metalcore band Oh Sleeper, based out of Fort Worth, TX. Buy merch & music. Follow their social media accounts & stream their songs. Show them some love! 🖤

I find no greater comfort than that of nostalgia. It’s like picking up a favorite blanket from childhood & snuggling with it. My throwback playlist on Spotify is a personal favorite of mine. Amidst the chaos, take time to be still, close your eyes, & seek God. There are so many songs I could recommend, but I’ll stick with a choice few that always put my heart at ease:

“Cry Out To Jesus” by Third Day ( Apple & Google Play )

There is hope for the helpless, rest for the weary, and love for the broken heart. And there is grace and forgiveness, mercy and healing. He’ll meet you wherever you are. Cry out to Jesus!

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmVxRl5bc4Y

“How He Loves” by David Crowder Band ( Apple & Google Play )

He is jealous for me. Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy. When all of a sudden I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory. And I realize just how beautiful You are and how great Your affections are for me.

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCunuL58odQ

“Living Hope” by Phil Wickham ( Apple & Google Play )

Then came the morning that sealed the promise. Your buried body began to breathe. Out of the silence, the Roaring Lion declared the grave has no claim on me. Jesus, Yours is the victory!

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-1fwZtKJSM

“Lord I Need You” by Matt Maher ( Apple & Google Play )

Lord I come, I confess. Bowing here I find my rest. Without You I fall apart. You’re the One that guides my heart. Lord I need You, oh I need You. Every hour I need You.

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuvfMDhTyMA

“Simplicity” by Rend Collective ( Apple & Google Play )

I come with my broken song to You the Perfect One, to worship You in spirit and truth. Only You. Give me a childlike heart. Lead me to where You are ’cause I’m coming back to my first love. Only You.

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrusZ-MkTn4

“When Loves Sees You” by Mac Powell ( Google Play ) | This song isn’t available anywhere else for digital purchase, but you can still support Mac on Apple Music.

I see what I made in your mother’s womb, and I see the day I fell in love with you. I see your tomorrows, nothing left to chance. I see My Father’s fingerprints. I see your story. I see My name written on every beautiful page. You see the struggle. You see the shame. I see the reason I came.

“You Can Have Me” by Sidewalk Prophets ( Apple & Google Play )

When did love become unmoving? When did love become unconsuming? Forgetting what the world has told me, Father of love You can have me.

Time for yet another long list! I will probably miss a show or two, but there should be something for everybody. The ✔️ indicates that I’ve either finished the show all the way through or just the portion that’s available on Netflix. FYI, I mostly stuck to TV shows because a movie recommendations list would take the rest of my life to curate. Take what you can get! 😉

🇬🇧 British Broadchurch, Call the Midwife, Sherlock, The Great British Baking Show ✔️, & The Stranger ✔️

*Note: Sadly Happy Valley & Shetland are no longer available. 😭 I would also recommend Rosemary & Thyme if you can find it. I think all 3 shows are  on BritBox but don’t know if what’s available in the UK is different from the US.

Cartoon Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island ✔️, & What’s New Scooby-Doo? ✔️

Classic The Andy Griffith Show ✔️ & Twin Peaks ✔️ ( season 3 is on Showtime )

Comedy – I recommend comedians John MulaneyKevin Hart, & Sebastian Maniscalco. I promise you’ll be in pain from all the laughter! 😂

🇫🇷 French Black Spot ✔️ & La Mante ✔️

Binge & Then Binge Again Breaking Bad + El Camino ✔️, Gilmore Girls + Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life ✔️, Parks & Recreation, & The Office ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️

Netflix Originals Stranger Things, The Witcher ✔️, Unbelievable ✔️, & You ✔️

🇪🇸 Spanish Cable Girls, El Barco ✔️, Gran Hotel ✔️, High Seas ✔️, Morocco: Love in Times of War, The Invisible Guest ✔️, & Velvet + Velvet Colección

*Note: I also like Isabel, Los Hombres de Paco,  The Time in Between, & Un Paso Adelante, all shows I have yet to complete. Sadly I can’t recommend any place to watch them because they’ve all moved since I started. If you live in Europe, you might have better luck.

True Crime Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes ✔️, Evil Genius ✔️, The Keepers ✔️, & The Staircase ✔️

I’m Watching: I’m taking a brief break from Criminal Minds & making my way, once again, through Heartland. I read the books in middle school & have been a fan of the show for basically the same amount of time. 🐴 💕

Instead of listing a bunch of YouTubers, I’m going to share what I turn to when I’m feeling sad: Laughter! My go-to sources are bloopers from Friends, The Office, & Whose Line Is It AnywayMark Ferris & Zoe Sugg‘s funniest moments, Holly & Phillip on This Morning, & The Carol Burnett Show.

There are so many bloopers I could share, but it wouldn’t feel right not focusing on Lisa Kudrow‘s laugh. If you make it all the way through this video without smiling, you’re dead inside. 💀

Dinner Party is one of my favorite episodes, & the bloopers might be even funnier, specifically the TV scene at 4:56. ⬇️

I swear Drew Carey’s laugh clears acne! Chip & Colin & Drew & Jeff & Ryan & Wayne . . . I love all of them! 💕

These two are a force to be reckoned with. Every time they spend time together, I count the seconds until their vlogs are uploaded. It’s hard to pick a favorite moment, but 35:29 is definitely at the top.

*Note: The best two channels for Ferris/Sugg content, aside from their own channels of course, are Funny Montages & YouTuber Moments.

It doesn’t get much better than Harvey Korman & Tim Conway. This sketch is a classic! Harvey’s accent when he says “Daffy Duck” never fails to makes me laugh out loud. 😂

I’m Watching: It should come as no surprise that I’ve been watching Mark & Zoe‘s funniest moments while working on my laptop. Can’t stop, won’t stop!
